About Memories of an Era: Reflections of Our Time
The paintings in this exhibit were developed from family photos taken during 1965-66 when Jeanine Hill-Soldner’s father was deployed on his first tour of duty during the Vietnam War. He father passed away in 1993 due to Agent Orange, which contributed to his prostate cancer. This led her to begin working on these paintings in early 1999, resulting from the need to establish a narrative about the impact of war the spouses, children, parents and siblings of someone serving in the military. In addition, it was to help herself untangle childhood memories of growing up in military family during a time of war.
Each painting reveals that life goes on when families and loved ones are separated. With the work in this Hill-Soldner aims to delve deeper into the stories we tell, and the memories we cherish or fear.
