Solo Show at Water Street Studios, February 10- March 3, 2023
"Confluence"
Exhibited in the beautiful Wadsworth Family Galleries on the campus of Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois from June 20 - August 12, 2022.
Artist Statement:
My paintings in “Confluence” reveal a continual process of coming together of events, factors and ideas by merging them over time. I search for confluent images within my photographs that represent events of the recent past, and present, while always looking toward the future. I explore personal experiences, and weave together layers of color and light creating connections to the wider world into my own story. The everyday provides a rich source of ideas and images that I continually mine for inspiration for my work.
I have chosen the events of 9/11 as a time reference to begin my story. While not a retrospective, I have chosen a small selection of my most significant paintings. These paintings reveal a merging together of people and places in space and time. You could say that these are “snapshots” of a world that never slows down and never gives up.
The newest paintings in the show mark a change. In March 2020 I moved from my studio of 14 years to a smaller space closer to my home. The ensuing months brought lonely empty streets, and shuttered businesses. I frequently walked through the wooded parks nearby, feeling quiet and meditative being close to nature. I responded to feeling of loss by looking closely at trees, and marveled at their endurance to withstand the decades in silence and found solace in their presence. My new work reflects the profound strength of trees, and roots that have helped my feel grounded.
